John reminds us that knowing God and following Him comes before blindly following in the traditions of men. He draws from the passage out of Mark 7:1-13. Jesus is confronted by the Pharisees who are complaining that Jesus' disciples are not following their traditions. They were hoping to trap Jesus in His words, but Jesus responds with a verse from Isaiah 29:13, "This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me." God's desire is for us to know Him, know His Word, listen to His voice and live by faith. Our methods, traditions and models can never substitute a desperate dependance on the Lord.
