“Grant, we pray, almighty God, that, purifying us by the sacred practice of penance, you may lead us in sincerity of heart to attain the holy things to come. Through our Lord Jesus Chrst, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”
The Bible often talks about God as the refiner making us better through trials. God burns off impurities and anything in the way of the connection He desires with us. Jesus talks about God as the vine-dresser, trimming vines in order to get a better harvest of fruit.
A tree is known by the fruit it bears. We are to be bearing fruit if the truth lives in us. God refines us in the fire because we are precious to Him. No one refines cheap metals, but you refine gold and silver because of their value. God considers us worth refining, even though we continue to turn away from Him.
Take the time today to be refined, and to be thankful. Remind yourself what the goal of the Lenten season is. Most importantly, work to find your impurities and ask God to work in that area and to turn it to gold.
