Posture Preceeds Praise

This Sunday I taught on some of the expressive worship postures found throughout the Bible. The list of scriptures or examples below aren't exhaustive, but gives us a glimpse of what the Bible has to say for each example of expressive worship.

I thought the whole service was amazing and I was really proud of you all! I'm sure it was a new or stretching experience for some of you. Regardless of where you might be in your life with Christ, I hope that you left with a greater understanding of what it means to position yourself before the Lord... and I hope that you had fun. I know I did!

Singing

Psalms 59:16 But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.
Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.
Psalm 47 Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm!

Raising Hands

Psalm 63:1-4 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.
Lamentations 2:19 Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.

Clapping

Psalm 47:1 Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
Psalm 98:7-8 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together. Even Creation claps!

Shouting

Psalm 81:1 Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob!
Psalm 32:11 Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
Psalm 66:1-3 Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Zephaniah 3:14-15 Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away the judgments against you; he has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall never again fear evil.

Kneeling, Laying Prostrate

Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God has highly exalted him [Jesus] and bestowed on
him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Revelation 4:11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and
power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

Psalms 95:6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD,
our Maker!

Being Still, Meditating

Hebrews 12:28-29 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
Psalm 77:6 I said, “Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart.”
Psalm 77:12-13 I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God?
Psalm 119:15-16 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
Psalm 145:5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

Dancing

2 Samuel 6:14-15 And David danced before the LORD with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the horn.
Psalm 149:3 Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!
Psalm 30:11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness.
Exodus 15:19-20 For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, the LORD brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing.
