Holy Arson

“Pour out your grace into our hearts, we pray, O Lord, that we may be constantly drawn away from unruly desires and obey by your own gift the heavenly teaching you give us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”

Jesus is the light of life. In John 1 we see Jesus as the light shining in a darkness that didn’t want or understand it. We have this light in us, and Jesus allows us to live in the light of life. He gives us wings, sets us free, and beckons us to fly to Him. We are free to live in the light given to us by Him. The Bible says we have this light if we love one another. Jesus gives us freedom to love.

Love is the true miracle of the resurrection. John Calvin once wrote that each man carries a kingdom in his own chest, and the love of Christ--or devotion to that love--allows a man to neglect his own kingdom for the service of Christ’s. The love Christ brought to the world is the only reason peace is possible, it is the only reason reconciliation is possible, and is the only answer for our problems. Living in the light, as He is in the light, means setting fire to your own kingdom in holy arson in order to join something so much better.
