“O God, who anointed your Only Begotten Son with the Holy Spirit and made him Christ and Lord, graciously grant that, being made sharers in his consecration, we may bear witness to your Redemption in the world. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”
Today we go back to the upper room. We focus on the bread and the wine. Jesus took them and used them as a symbol of His coming sacrifice. I’m not sure if the disciples knew what He was doing, if they knew the purpose of the symbol, or if they were as confused as always. I do know Jesus knew what He was doing.
He knew His time on earth was short. He washed His disciples feet as a final lesson on how to serve one another. The teacher became a servant in order to show His students the proper way to move through life. The greatest man who ever lived washed filthy feet for us. He broke bread and passed out wine to show His selfless love is nourishment for all of us. In the Passover, the Jews were spared certain death by the sign of blood. In the Lord’s supper, we are reminded of the sign of blood and the gift of certain life.
